Small Town Life Suits Betty Rook

Betty Rook is a farm girl from Flat Lake, located about 4 miles from Chicken Lake. There were 5 children in her family, she had two brothers and two sisters. She remembers working hard and getting up early to milk the cows before walking to school. They walked 3.5 miles to attend school in Chicken Lake and always made it on time. In winter she remembers how they would slide down the snow banks and how the children loved playing outside. Of course, they always wore warm clothes. When she got older she rode a bus for one and a half hours to attend school in Glendon.

At 18 Betty married her first husband and moved to Edmonton. Later they moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba but the marriage ended in divorce. She was married a second time and had a son Donald. When Donald was only 11 his father passed away leaving Betty to raise him on her own. She fondly remembers her son as a good kid that never kept her worrying. "If he was going to be late home, he would always phone."

She move back to St. Paul in 1981 and likes to live in a small town where everyone knows everyone and we all help each other out.

She currently collects her old age pension but works regularly at Club Bingo as a volunteer. She enjoys doing puzzles, reading and having coffee with friend and Jack's place. To keep fit, she plays ball, bowls on a team and walks. She traveled all across Canada to play ball in Halifax.

She is very proud of her son Donald. He shares expenses, chores with her and he is an excellent shopper.
