A Westlock Dynamo! Sylvia Yakimchuk's Story - 2005 Update
Sylvia Yakimchuk tells her story.I was born at the Two Hills hospital in 1959, so that makes me 44 years old. I am the youngest of 3 children. I moved to Rochester when I was a teenager. I now live with my mom and dad, Nick and Jean, right in Westlock. My parents are nice. Ernie is my older brother and he's married to Debbie and they live in Rochester. He works in a hardware store. Debbie works in Athabasca at a grocery store. I have a sister named Gloria who lives at Lloydminster. She works at a store and sells and hems clothing. She has two kids. I just became a great-auntie.

I run errands for my parents, such as going to the I.G.A. for groceries. Sometimes I do the banking for them because they can't get out much because they can't walk too good and my mom's shoulder hurts sometimes. Sometimes I go to the doctor with them. I help clean the house, set the table, wash the table, and wash the dishes and put them away.

The Westlock Independence Network (WIN) keeps me busy. Thelma from the WIN Office got me into playing hockey. I take a bus to hockey games. I have gone to lots of places, trips to Calgary and Saint Paul and this year I go to Wetaskiwin. I play defense and have won 1st and 2nd place medals in hockey. I also play other sports and I have stayed over night in hotels and have gone to banquets. I like to bowl and have bowled 100. I have a 2nd place medal and a bronze medal in bowling. I like to play baseball. People from Athabasca play on my team.

Thanks to WIN. I like it here because I have my friends here and I know all the workers here. Greg is a good manager of WIN because he's easy to get along with. Thanks to Kim for helping me get the job at the library where I water flowers. Kim also helped me get a job volunteering at St. Mary's School where she helps Grade 2 kids with whatever they want help with in the classroom. Kim also helped me get a volunteer job at the Health Unit stamping things and putting them into bags (things like keys, pencils, and erasers). Thelma helped me get a job volunteering at bingos at St. Mary's Auxiliary Hospital. I help call out the numbers. I also help Thelma do the activity calendars for the WIN office. Glen is the nice, handsome secretary at the WIN office who sometimes teases me.

I handle my own bank account at the Treasury Branch. I sign cheques and I can make deposits. I recently had cataract surgery on both eyes and had a good operation. I can't lift anything over 20 pounds, but I'm healthy.

I like to go out for coffee with my friends, Mary and Sarah. I want to go out more. I'd like to go to the bars with my friends. I like to sing. In the future I'd like to live in an apartment and have a roommate.
